The Book of Vows
About the Book
The Book of Vows is the sixth book in the “Mishneh Torah”, it deals with one topic: The spoken word and holiness of speech. With the end of the previous book, The Book of Holiness, which deals mostly things that go into our mouths, forbidden foods, this one deals with things coming out of our mouth.
The book begins with the laws of oaths, what is an oath and what is the fate of perjuring, it continues to the laws of vows, and then to the laws of nazirites (Maimonides determines whether becoming a nazirite is an ideal situation or for repairong a situation which is not right) and finishes with the laws of values and boycotts, laws of endowments that a person makes to holiness.
Structure of the Book:
The Laws Pertaining to Oaths:
General statements said the name of God about things that happened in the past and future commitments imposed on ones self, Lieing about deposited property in your care and denial of knowledge of the facts that can help testimony.
The Laws Pertaining to Vows:
Commitment to distancing oneself in the future and accepting prohibitions.
The Laws Pertaining to Nazerites:
Becoming a nazarite is a personal vow, the commitment of distancing yourself and the prohibitions you take on to yourself.
The Laws Pertaining to Morals and Boycotts:
Laws of endowments in detail, they are willing commitments to give to the Temple or to the cohanim from your assets as redemption for your soul or as a symbol of gratitude to God or for the needs of the Temple
