About the Book
The Book of Women is the fourth book in the “mishne Torah”, it deals with family from its creation until its destruction and how to keep it whole.
The books begins with the wedding (Hilchot Ishut) and divorce, in the wedding if the husband dies (Yibbum) or getting out of that situation(Chalitzah). At the end the book deals with a girl who was fooled, raped or accused by her newlywed husband of adultery. At the end of the book are the laws pertaining to the issue of sotah, a woman accused of cheating and how to check her. The book finishes with the importance of a peaceful home and maintaining modesty.
Structure of the Book:
The Laws Pertaining to Ishut:
Creating Ishut by a voluntary marrige is done in two steps, the kiddushin (or erusin) and the wedding, and maintaining the mutual obligations of the couple to each other.
The Laws Pertaining to Divorce:
Breaking up to connection is done with a get.
The Laws Pertaining to Yibbum vChalitzah:
When the husband dies without having any kids, the family connection between the widow and brother of the deceased, who was off limits until now, reopens to a new kindling which allows the continuation of the family and its wholeness if they both wish The marital connection caused by this is called yibbum, and if not wished the disconnection is done by chalitzah.
The Laws Pertaining to Naarah Besulah:
Malfunction in chaii ishut might be caused by prohibited coitus with a girl who was not betrothed, whether willingly, by fooling her, or unwillingly – rape. A similar malfunction can occur between betrothal and marriage, if a husband accuses his wife of not being a virgin when he married her, a claim that may turn out to be false, for example if it turns out that the husband had enough of his wife and tried to ruin her name.
The Laws Pertaining to Sotah:
Malfunction may arise in marriage, if the husband suspected his wife of cheating on him. This suspicion is brought for clarification to the temple, and has the power to require divorce or continuation of marital life in tranquility reliability and peace.
